George was born in June 1958 and has lived
all his life in Cookstown, Co Tyrone. He comes from a rural farming
background (grandfather). He is married to Margaret and they have
3 children, Karuna, Ben and John.
George attended the Ulster College of Art 1975-76 and completed
Foundation Studies; he then changed to train as a teacher of Boys
PE. He taught PE for some years and then in 1995 became a full
time Art Teacher in Cookstown High School. He was subsequently
made Head of Department in 2001.
For approximately 20 years George has been painting in his spare
time. He began with street/village scenes in Sepia. Character
studies began approx 1993, and two years ago he introduced Burnt
Sienna to his work. His paintings are on display in galleries
throughout Ireland, and his commissioned work can be found in
the UK, Europe, North America and Australia.
More recently George has become very interested in derelict property/farms
which litter the countryside. George says 'When I look at or paint
these forgotten homes I think of the generations of families who
lived, laughed and died within their walls. I always keep a camera
in the car and often stop, clear gates or walls to photograph
such buildings. The character and characters of the rural landscape
is changing, many aspects are gone, lost. If I manage to capture
something that's been lost, then I'm happy.'
